Multiple-Micronutrient and EED Assessment Tool (MEEDAT)

 Research, development, and validation of a multiplexed microarray to detect Environmental Enteric Dysfunction (EED) and growth hormone resistance biomarkers in human samples. Four new biomarkers (intestinal fatty acid binding protein (I-FABP; intestinal damage), soluble CD14 (sCD14; monocyte activation from microbial translocation), insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1; local action of the growth hormone axis), and fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21; growth-hormone resistance/protein deficiency)) have been added into an existing multiplex immunoassay (containing AGP, CRP, ferritin, sTfR, RBP4, thyroglobulin, and HRP2). 
This tool could improve the efficiency by which children could be screened for both EED and micronutrient deficiency prior to enrollment into clinical trials and streamline the evaluation of efficacy in trials where markers are clinical endpoints. The performance of the assay has been verified in clinical specimens from the US, and will be further validated using commercially available monoplex assays to test and compare analyte levels in serum samples from infants 9-12 months of age enrolled in a rotavirus vaccine booster study in Mali.
